Riding a two-game winning streak, the Fairfield football team has a chance to make the postseason as the regular season comes to an end.
The Trojans will take on Mount Pleasant in Fairfield on Friday night in the latest edition of “The War on 34.” Fairfield (3-5) currently sits at 2-2 in Class 3A, District 4 and are tied for the third and final playoff spot with Washington (4-4, 2-2). Undefeated Solon (8-0, 4-0) has already clinched the district title.
Mount Pleasant (6-2) is in second place in the district with a mark of 3-1. The Trojans can make the playoffs with a win and a Washington loss. Conversely, a Fairfield win and a Washington win vs Keokuk could create a logjam with three teams tied at 3-2 in the district and setting up a series of tiebreakers.
Fairfield Head Coach Matt Jones is aware of the implications but he wants his team to focus on Mount Pleasant.
“Bottom line, we [got to] prepare the guys the best that we can and the boys have to go out there and not worry so much about the p-word [playoffs],” Jones said. “They just [got to] focus down to down and take care of what they can control.”
