The newly reopened Libertyville Road Bridge is giving local drivers some welcome relief this week, but the smooth ride won’t last long—another major project is already on the horizon.
Jefferson County Engineer DeWayne Heintz announced that a $4.9 million rehabilitation project on Libertyville Road (H43) is scheduled to begin next summer. Plans for the extensive project are expected to be ready for bid letting in December 2025 or January 2026.
The work will include shoulder reconstruction, installation of subdrains, pavement repair, and a complete asphalt overlay. In addition, four-foot paved shoulders will be added to the roadway, a feature Heintz noted will improve safety and accessibility for motorists.
Funding will come from a mix of Federal, State, and Farm to Market funds, reflecting the importance of Libertyville Road as a key transportation route in Jefferson County.
While the project is expected to significantly improve the road’s durability and safety, it will come with temporary inconveniences. Heintz said the road will be closed to through traffic during construction, but residents who live along the route will still have access with the help of flaggers.
Although a detailed construction timeline has not yet been provided, Heintz said the work is scheduled to start in next summer’s construction season, when weather conditions are best and disruptions to winter travel can be avoided. However, the overall duration will depend on how smoothly the work progresses, and factors such as heavy rain or other weather delays could extend the project. Only time and mother nature will tell when this project comes around.
For now, drivers can enjoy the road with the newly opened Libertyville Road bridge—but county officials say it’s best to prepare for another round of construction next year.
