Motorists traveling between Fairfield and Libertyville can finally ditch their detours as the newly constructed bridge over Big Cedar Creek on Libertyville Road opened today, marking the end of a major infrastructure project that began in late October 2024.
The bridge closure, which lasted several months, forced drivers to navigate significant detours while Jefferson County replaced the aging structure with modern infrastructure designed to serve the community for decades to come.
The bridge closure began in October of 2024, when Jefferson County Engineer DeWayne Heintz announced the county would rebuild the bridge over Big Cedar Creek. The bridge replacement was necessary because the original structure was “just plain worn out,” having been built in the 1950s and reaching the typical lifespan of a bridge.
Local businesses and residents who endured months of extended travel times can now resume their normal commuting patterns between Fairfield and Libertyville, restoring a vital transportation link in the county’s road network.
