Danny Lee Mathews, 80, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on October 1, 2025 at his home. He was born on July 26, 1945 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Burten W. and Opal M. McVey Mathews. He was a truck driver for the Davis County Engineer Office for many years. On May 3, 2019 he married Marilyn Mooney in Bloomfield.
Danny served in the Army from 1965-1967 as a combat engineer during Vietnam earning the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Army Expert Rifle Badge. He was very proud to have served his country and his dedication to the military and fellow veterans shaped his life. He was an active member of several organizations including; Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield where he served as Historian; Davis County Veteran’s Affairs where he served as Commission for 17 years; and the Patriot Guard Riders. He spent many hours volunteering for Wreaths Across America, the War Memorial Park in Ottumwa, and made countless trips to Des Moines and Iowa City to take veterans to doctor appointments. Danny also participated in many state and local parades. His dedication and generosity will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mathews of Bloomfield; two daughters, Jodi (Gary Pierson) Reynolds of Ottumwa, Iowa, Susan Mathews of Bloomfield; two sons, Chad (Angie) Mathews of Floris, Iowa, Corey Mathews of Moravia, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Willa Mathews, Lynda Mathews; and an infant brother, William Mathews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Dan Maeder officiating. Burial will be at the Agency Cemetery in Agency, Iowa. Visitation will begin at noon on Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 2-4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield.
