Art Club to Host Exhibit

The Ottumwa Art Club will host an exhibit to celebrate their 120th anniversary in the Indian Hills Community College art gallery from March 4 through April 1. The club was founded in 1906 for Ottumwa women interested in learning about art. The last club exhibit was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 1956.

The club plans to exhibit works of Ottumwa artists through the decades. While contemporary artists will be easy to feature, finding works from past decades will be more challenging. The community is asked for their help in highlighting Ottumwa’s artistic past through a variety of mediums, including painting, sculptures, and mixed media.

“We hope to feature some of the same Ottumwa artists who exhibited in 1956,” said organizer Kim Hellige, including Newton Roberts, John Sharp, Fred Hardsocg, Anne Rowe Moyer, Jack Clark, and Hazel Wormhoudt. Several Ottumwa High School students also participated in the 1956 exhibit, including Pam Frederickson, Sandy Miller, Daryl Bortz, Carol Cooper, and Gwen Taylor.

People with works of art to be considered for exhibition can contact the art club at ottumwaartclub@gmail.com for more information. Please include the artist name, date of work(s), and medium.
