On March 16, 1992, 17-year-old Aaron Michael Pate of Keota, Iowa, vanished without a trace. More than three decades later, his disappearance remains one of the state’s enduring mysteries, leaving his family and community searching for answers. As of September 2025, Aaron would be 50 years old. Instead, his loved ones continue to live with uncertainty.
A Teenager with Promise
Aaron was remembered as a typical small-town teenager—spirited, full of potential, and well-liked by those who knew him. He stood between 6’0” and 6’2” and weighed about 145–150 pounds. He had brown hair, brown eyes, and distinguishing features including moles on his back, a scar on his right wrist, glasses, and a pierced left ear.
The Day He Vanished
Aaron was last seen in Keota, a quiet town in Keokuk County. For reasons still unclear, his family didn’t report him missing until April 30, 1993—more than a year later. At the time, authorities considered the possibility that Aaron had run away, perhaps hitchhiking to the Grand Canyon to visit his father, who was living there. But as days turned into months with no contact, hopes that he had simply left on his own began to fade.
Aaron’s family car was later discovered abandoned in Iowa City, a discovery that deepened concerns. With no clear explanation and no evidence of trouble in his life, investigators were left with more questions than answers.
The Investigation
The Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office has overseen the case from the beginning, following leads as they surfaced. Over the years, Aaron’s name and story have been highlighted by Iowa Cold Cases, The Doe Network, and other advocacy groups dedicated to missing persons. Despite those efforts, no substantial breakthroughs have emerged.
