An abnormally wet summer in parts of the Corn Belt likely resulted in some nitrogen loss.
Ty Stender with Corteva Agriscience says northern Iowa was one area that saw heavy rains in June and July.
“And just overall a pretty wet year that has lead to a little bit of nitrogen loss, that’s showing up in some of the crops right about now.”
He tells Brownfield leaching and denitrification has occurred.
“We saw some of that, basically the nitrogen is moving out of the root zone, so if the plant started running a little bit short on nitrogen they started to show those symptoms here probably in the last month or so. And so we should be able to notice which fields are running short and which ones are still good.”
He says farmers should factor in nitrogen losses when making fall and spring fertilizer decisions.
