Authorities are emphasizing that this is a scam. “The police department will never ask you to pay a bill over the phone,” a department spokesperson stated. “Anyone who receives such a call should hang up and contact their local law enforcement agency directly.”
In an alarming twist, some victims have been instructed to pay these fictitious fines using iTunes gift cards, a method that is a clear red flag. Law enforcement urges everyone to remain cautious and to verify any suspicious claims by reaching out to the police department directly.
