Two Ottumwa men were arrested after police say they broke into a home early Wednesday morning with intentions of committing theft.
Judson Letts, 66, and William Martin, 67, were each charged with third-degree burglary, a Class D felony. Letts was also charged with possession of a controlled substance – third or subsequent offense, a Class D felony.
At approximately 6:35 AM, court records say Letts and Martin were observed via camera entering a vacant residence on Evergreen Avenue for the purpose of stealing items from the home. Police say both Letts and Martin have numerous theft and burglary convictions in their respective criminal records.
During the arrest, officers from the Ottumwa Police Department searched Letts and allegedly found a baggie with a small crystalline substance later identified as methamphetamine and a baggie with a green, leafy substance consistent with marijuana on his person.
Letts and Martin currently in the Wapello County Jail. Their respective bonds have been set at $5,000.
Both Letts and Martin have a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 18th.
