A small but meaningful statue was rescued from a major fire that broke out earlier this week in Albia’s town square.

The fire destroyed the historic R.O. Cramer Building, which had stood in the heart of downtown for years. Several businesses were impacted, but not everything was lost. Fire crews were able to save a miniature replica of the famous Iwo Jima statue, which was inside the Edward Jones office when the fire started.

The statue holds special meaning for the community. It’s one of several models created for the Welcome Home Soldier Monument — a large-scale tribute being built in Monroe County to honor American soldiers and veterans from every war. The project has been in the works for years and is still underway.

While the fire was a huge loss for the town, the fact that this statue was saved brought a small sense of hope and relief.
