Those in Kirksville on Wednesday morning may have noticed an unusual and impressive sight in the sky—eleven National Guard Black Hawk helicopters touched down at Kirksville Regional Airport for a brief refueling stop.
The helicopters arrived shortly before 10 a.m. and remained on the ground until around 11:30 a.m. The flight crews, based out of Boone, Iowa, were treated to lunch during their visit.
A handful of local residents gathered at the airport to catch a close-up glimpse of the military aircraft. In a rare opportunity, the pilots welcomed visitors to step up close to the helicopters, with a few lucky attendees even getting to sit in the pilot’s seat.
The National Guard crews were on their return journey from a training exercise held in Louisiana.
