The outreach agronomist with the Illinois Soybean Association says some farmers are dealing with wireworms this spring.
Stephanie Porter says the insects are typically found in fields with a history of infestations.
“They have a lot of protection and so it’s really, really hard to use an insecticide to kill those wire worms.” She says, “That makes them a major pest in certain years.”
She tells Brownfield…
“If you start seeing plants that look wilted and dead within the row, definitely do some digging.” She says, “They can cause you to need to replant in some situations depending on how big of an area with wireworms there are.”
Porter says scouting newly emerged crops is vital to ensure potential problems are identified and corrected early in the season.
