Scam Alert: Local Resident Targeted by Caller Posing as Federal Agent

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert residents about a phone scam that recently hit close to home.

A Corydon resident got a call from someone claiming to be with a federal law enforcement agency. The caller said there was an issue with a vehicle registered to the resident that was supposedly found in Texas. As the call went on, things escalated—the scammer claimed there were drug charges pending with the DEA.

Thankfully, the resident didn’t fall for it. Instead of giving up any personal information or sending money as the caller requested, they asked for a call-back number to verify the story. That’s when it got even more concerning: the scammer called back, and this time the resident’s caller ID showed “WAYNE CO SHERIF”—along with the actual phone number for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. It looked legit, but it wasn’t. The number was spoofed.
