A northwest Iowa farmer says he plans to conduct some research trials on his operation during the growing season.

Brent Swart, who currently serves as president of the Iowa Soybean Association, says cover crops will be a big focus.

“How we can continue to be better at implementing cover crops and not only being effective in the management of cover crops, but helping farmers grow and continue to increase yields in that environment.”

He tells Brownfield he also plans to monitor his soybean population.

“In how we can utilize that to affect change on our farm. In production, profitability and sustainability is what we’re all about.”

Swart says the research should help show the sustainability benefits of conservation practices.

Swart farms near Spencer with his brother Steve.
