Authorities have arrested a Cedar Rapids man in connection with a violent, unprovoked assault on a disabled veteran earlier this month.
According to a criminal complaint, 24-year-old Daniel Doyen was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly attacking 48-year-old Andrew Holling on March 13 in the 1000 block of B Avenue.
Investigators say Holling was assaulted without provocation when Doyen punched him multiple times. After the initial attack, Holling attempted to take a photo of his attacker. However, Doyen returned, took Holling’s cane, and struck him with it an estimated 15 to 20 times.
As a result of the attack, Holling suffered a black eye, cuts, scrapes, and a head injury that required five staples.
The criminal complaint states that investigators determined the cane was used as a dangerous weapon in the assault.
Doyen now faces charges of Willful Injury – Bodily Harm and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon.
Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and it remains unclear whether Doyen has any prior criminal record. The case remains under investigation.
Daniel Doyen is being held in the Linn County Correctional Center
