The Fairfield City Council held its first meeting of April Monday night.
After the consent agenda was approved, Daryn Hamiliton from the Kiwanis Club of Fairfield opened the public forum by noting this year marks the 60th year that the Kiwanis Club has been in Fairfield. According to Hamilton, Kiwanis Kids Day will be held on September 20 this year, and the parade theme will be “Adventure Awaits.” Hamilton requested the council allow Kiwanis to use the northeast quadrant of the Fairfield town square and block off a couple of streets for foot traffic.
Collector Cars Unlimited will have its annual car show on September 21, and Cruise Night will be held on June 6 and August 1. The council approved the blocking of streets for all three events.
Kate Miller, a Fairfield seventh-grader, was present to receive her award for her “If I Were a Mayor” essay. Miller’s essay was the grand prize winner of Iowa’s first congressional district.
Executive Director Lindsay Bauer of the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center spoke next, and she provided an annual report. The highlight was that FACC saw a 50 percent increase in attendance in the last fiscal year, which rose above pre-pandemic numbers. Additionally, Bauer says FACC will be embarking on a $450,000 capital campaign to update the facility and remain a competitive venue for events such as weddings.
The council also approved the budget for the 2026 fiscal year by a unanimous vote.
