A group of Iowa veterans will be embarking on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. later this month.
Don Lewis, an area veteran, is one of the tour group’s chaperons. Lewis says around 40 veterans from southeast and central Iowa will fly to the nation’s capital for a three-day tour.
“It’s an opportunity for World War II, Korea, and Vietnam vets to get to go to D.C. to see all of the displays and monuments to the different eras”
The group will take off from Kirksville, Missouri and will be in Washington D.C. on March 20-22. A send-off luncheon will take place at the American Legion in Ottumwa on March 16.
Deb Roe, an Army veteran and another chaperone, says the trip is free for the veterans.
“All of the trip for the veterans is completely free of charge: the airline, the hotel, the meals, the tour bus in D.C. The only thing they need to bring is what spending money they want.”
Roe says although the trip is free for the veterans, their caretakers would be charged $800 for the trip. But due to a grant from The Legacy Foundation, Roe says the caretakers will travel free of charge.
