A Fairfield man received his sentence earlier this week after being found guilty of attacking a police officer with a baseball bat.
76-year-old Larry Bell was convicted of going armed with intent (Class D felony), interference with official acts (Class D felony), willful injury resulting in body injury (Class D felony), and assault on persons in certain occupations with a dangerous weapon (Class D felony).
Bell was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
According to law enforcement, Bell struck an officer from the Fairfield Police Department in the head/neck area with a baseball bat while the officer was taking a different person into custody. The blow deflected off the officer’s ballistic vest and hit his head, causing injury.
Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding says the officer was able to fight through the assault, disarm Bell, and arrest him after subduing him with a taser. The individual who was being arrested at the onset of the incident escaped and was later captured.
Moulding says during Bell’s trial, the defendant testified to regretting his actions but was not sorry.
In addition to his sentence, Bell was ordered to pay a fine of $1,025 on each count as well as a criminal surcharge and a sentencing no-contact order with the officer was ordered.
