A local high school student was killed after being struck by a car on Friday night, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on Highway 92 when it lost a tire. Kyle Burk, a student at Sigourney High School, was a passenger and attempted to cross the highway to retrieve the tire when he was struck by another vehicle traveling westbound.

Authorities say Burk was transported to a hospital in Des Moines but died from his injuries.

The Sigourney Community School District announced that additional counseling and support personnel will be available on campus for all students and staff this week, and there will be no school for PK-12 students on Thursday, the day of Burk’s funeral. After-school activities will still be held.

Arrangments are being handled by Langkamp Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Oskaloosa.
