December 23, 2024 – Ottumwa, Iowa – Ottumwa Firefighters overcame multiple structure fires over the weekend of December 20, 2024. On Friday, December 20 the Ottumwa Fire Department responded to a trailer house fire at 642 South Milner Street around 7:00 p.m. This property had been torn down prior to the fire. A second alarm was sounded for additional assistance with the fire.
The second fire occurred Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 1:40 a.m. Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 424 Waverly Avenue. Fire crews found flames coming out of all sides of the structure upon arrival. This house had previously been tagged by the Health Department and did not have anyone living in it. A second alarm was struck to assist with getting the fire under control. Interim Fire Chief Short and Interim Deputy Chief Cronin also responded. Fire crews were on scene until approximately 5:00 a.m.
The final fire occurred Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 10:49 p.m. A two-car garage at 1203 North Fellows Avenue had caught fire. Firefighters were on scene within approximately three minutes to find flames and a lot of smoke coming out of both overhead doors. A second and third alarm were struck for additional assistance. This fire was out and overhaul complete around 1:00 a.m. on Monday, December 23.
All fires are currently under investigation.
