A boating accident on the Mississippi claimed the lives of three men according to the Iowa DNR.

Officials say at approximately 11:00 AM on Sunday, a boat with three male occupants capsized below Lock and Dam No. 12 in Bellevue on the river. The DNR says the victims were fishing in a restricted area directly beneath the dam at the time of the accident.

The preliminary investigation says the boat was pulled into the hazardous waters due to a strong black flow current created by the dam’s operation. The men were pulled from the water and taken to shore where emergency responders attempted to render first aid on the victims but two men were confirmed dead at the scene. The third victim was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The identities of the deceased were withheld pending family notification.

The accident remains under investigation.
