A child in rural Mahaska County died from an accidental gunshot on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office says emergency personnel were called to the 2600 block of 250th Street at 2:00 PM. Upon arrival, officials observed a four-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound.
Deputies and paramedics began life-saving procedures but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the sheriff’s office, the preliminary investigation indicates the child was wounded by an “accidental discharge.”
The incident remains under investigation. The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Mahaska Health Ambulance Service.
