Des Moines, IA (Treasurer of State) – State Treasurer Roby Smith is inviting Iowans to visit his Great Iowa Treasure Hunt booth at the Iowa State Fair and search for unclaimed property.
“While enjoying the rides and fun-filled entertainment at the Iowa State Fair, I encourage everyone to stop by the booth and search their names,” Smith said. “The Iowa State Fair is our largest in-person outreach event. We currently have more than $521 million waiting to be claimed!”
Located in the Varied Industries Building, the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt booth will be available for fairgoers to search and file a claim online.
“Treasury staff will also be available to help guide fairgoers in searching for their missing money and claiming those funds, as well as answer those questions about the overall process,” concluded Smith.
Unclaimed property occurs when a business or financial institution loses contact with the owner of the asset after a specific period of time and turns it over to the State Treasurer’s Office for safekeeping. Through Great Iowa Treasure hunt, Smith works to reunite the assets with the owners or heirs. Common examples include forgotten checking and savings accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility refunds, and safe deposit box contents.
Stop by the Iowa State Fair booth to find your unclaimed property and pick up free giveaway items.
