The Ottumwa Community School District unveiled its newest building to stakeholders and the public on Monday.

The open house at Fahrney Elementary featured a ribbon-cutting, comments from Ottumwa Schools Superintendent Mike McGrory, and a tour of the new facility.

Fahrney Elementary is 55,000 square feet and located at 520 South Milner Street.

Steve Zimmerman is the principal of Fahrney Elementary and he told Ottumwa Radio News he loves the new building.

“It is like winning the lottery. It is amazing. It is state of the art. And I would put this building up against any building in the state. it is top notch and our students deserve the best and they will get the best.” Steve Zimmerman, Principal of Fahrney Elementary

The new school boasts 40 classrooms and a full-court gymnasium. Fahrney Elementary will serve students in Grades 3-5 and will be connected to Douma Elementary.

The district says the school takes its namesake from Helen and Charles Fahrney—remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to Ottumwa, ensuring our children could dare to dream.

The 2024-25 school year begins on August 23.
