A mainstay in the Centerville Fire Department says he will be retiring next spring after 35 years of service.
According to the city of Centerville, Chief Vern Milburn will step down in April.
Milburn began his career with the Centerville Fire Department as a volunteer in 1989, became a full-time firefighter in 1996, and assumed the role of Fire Chief in 2023. Throughout his tenure, the city says Chief Milburn has been instrumental in enhancing emergency response capabilities, educating future generations on fire safety, and being a compassionate leader.
Under Milburn’s leadership, the Centerville Fire Department has reached significant milestones. He expanded Fire Prevention training, took on the critical role of arson investigator, and became the de facto fire chaplain, offering guidance and support through the highs and lows
of his fellow firefighters’ lives. His strategic vision and proactive approach have been instrumental in safeguarding our community during emergencies and disasters.
“Chief Milburn’s retirement marks the end of an era for our fire department and city. His leadership, passion, and tireless dedication to public service have left an indelible mark on Centerville. We are deeply grateful for his 35 years of service and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.” Centerville City Administrator Jason Fraser
Chief Milburn’s successor will be appointed following a thorough external selection process to ensure continuity in leadership and service delivery to Centerville residents, according to the city.
