Anna Topping


Anna “Irene” Topping, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on July 2, 2024, at the Keosauqua Health Care Center. Born on July 23, 1924, in the small town of Kilbourne, Irene was the beloved daughter of Ray and Lula Schleeter Gates.

Irene’s early years were marked by her education at Argyle High School, from which she graduated Valedictorian in 1942. Her first marriage to Howard Carruthers on November 4, 1944, ended in divorce, but love found her again, and she married Dean Wesley Topping on May 25, 1948. Together, they built a life filled with joy and companionship until Dean’s passing on March 4, 1988. Before her marriage, Irene worked diligently as a secretary, a role that showcased her organization and attention to detail.

Throughout her life, Irene was actively involved in various organizations, contributing her time and talents to the betterment of those around her. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her longstanding membership with the United Methodist Church, where she found strength and solace in her community and worship.

Irene’s legacy is carried on by her loving family, including her sons, Dennis Verle Topping (Charlene) and Carl Allen Topping. She was a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren, and her joy multiplied with the arrival of each of her 24 great-grandchildren and 31 great-great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. Irene’s extended family also includes a sister-in-law, Dixie Gates, and numerous relatives and friends who will fondly remember her kindness and spirit.

Preceding Irene in death were her parents, her husband Dean, her son Wesley Eugene Topping, her daughter-in-law Ernestine Topping, her sisters Ruth Plowman and Frances Tedrow, her brothers Duane “Butch” Gates and Clarence “Bud” Gates, and a stepson, James Topping.

Visitation for Irene will open at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, with the family present to receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Cranston Family Funeral Home in Keosauqua. A memorial service to celebrate Irene’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at the same location, with Pastor Phill Campbell officiating. Irene’s final resting place will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, where she will be laid to rest in a ceremony immediately following the memorial service.
