Douglas Martin Newby, 52, of Cedar Rapids, IA died Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at his home. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place. He will be laid to rest in the Iowaville Cemetery near Selma, IA. A time to celebrate and remember Doug will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024 in the Family Life Center at the Assembly of God Church in Eldon, IA. Douglas Martin Newby was born on January 4, 1972, in Ottumwa, IA. He was the first son of Larry Newby and Marcia Liles. While growing up Doug enjoyed BMX racing, but his first love was basketball. Doug spent numerous hours at the YMCA playing basketball, practicing layups, free throws and 3-point shots. All this practice paid off for him when, during his senior year of high school playing for the Cardinal Comets in Eldon, IA he set a new school record of 43 points, eight of them being 3-pointers. Besides his love of basketball, he enjoyed working out and entered numerous bodybuilding and deadlift competitions.

Doug is survived by his greatest love and joy, his daughter, Shelby Sanders; grandson, Ryker Sanders; his parents and two brothers, Matthew Canny of West Des Moines, and David Poncelow of Elkhart.

Doug was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lloyd “Gene” and Helen Liles of Eldon and his paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Louise Newby of Donnellson.
