Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate in Johnson County.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Nathaniel Davis Jr. was booked in the county jail on March 10 to serve a seven-day sentence.
On March 14, a deputy observed Davis falling over in his cell on video surveillance. Jail staff responded to the cell and determined Davis was having a medical emergency.
After staff performed life-saving procedures, Davis was transported to the University of Iowa Emergency Department. Davis passed away in the hospital on March 19.
The sheriff’s office requested the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to investigate the incident.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office will also be conducting an autopsy.
