Virgie Van Zee, 83, of Pleasant Hill and formerly Oskaloosa, passed away Sunday morning, October 29, 2023, at her home in Pleasant Hill.

Virgie Mae Van Zee, daughter of Raymond and Hazel (Breuklander) Dickerson, was born on April 24, 1941, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was a 1959 graduate of Oskaloosa. On June 21, 1959, she married the love of her life, Dwight Van Zee, in Clarinda, Iowa. Dwight passed away on September 16, 2021. They made their home in Oskaloosa, and Virgie worked at Oskaloosa Produce for three years and a short time at Continental Overall Factory before enrolling in Ottumwa Beauty School. Following the completion of beauty school, she opened Beau Monde Beauty Salon. She operated the salon for nine years before selling it and working at Pella Corp. She remained at Pella Corp until her retirement in 2000.

Virgie enjoyed playing ball with her grandsons and attending their sporting events throughout grade and high school. She and Dwight enjoyed traveling in their RV, boating, and cycling all over the U.S. After their retirement, they took a seven-week tour of the Southwest and California in their motorhome and another seven-week trip to Alaska. Virgie was a member of the Rose Hill Community Church.
Virgie’s family her children and their spouses: Rick and Virginia Van Zee of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and Marlys and Slade Speers of Monroe, Iowa; three grandchildren: Crystal Lewis-Van Zee, Dalton (Taylor) Speers, and Sheldon (Katie) Speers; a great-grandson, Sterling Speers; four siblings: Shirley (Dave) Fox of Oskaloosa, Betty (Merlin) Robertson of Oskaloosa, Janet (Rick) Welch of Oskaloosa, and Paul (Lupe) Dickerson of Huntington Beach, California; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Dickerson of Oskaloosa.

Virgie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dwight, and a brother, Jerry Dickerson.

Funeral services for Virgie will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel & Crematory, with Pastor Mike Sennet officiating. Inurnment will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m.; the family will greet visitors from 1-2 p.m. before the service.
