Police: Ottumwa Man Assaults Girlfriend, Turns Gun on Self

Ottumwa police say a man is in custody after assaulting his girlfriend while armed and then turning the gun on himself.

34-year-old Cory Lee Thompson has been charged with domestic abuse assault with a dangerous weapon, first-degree harassment, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, domestic abuser in possession of a firearm, and possession of a short-barreled rifle.

According to Lieutenant Jason Bell, Thompson’s girlfriend, 36-year-old Shauntel McNabb, contacted authorities in the lobby of the police department on Tuesday at 5:04 PM and informed officers that she was the victim of an assault by Thompson who was also armed with a firearm. Further investigation revealed Thompson was homicidal, suicidal, and had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face.

Police say Thompson was located at the storage units at South Iowa Avenue. A perimeter was established and Thompson was taken into custody without incident at 7:30 Tuesday night. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Thompson was transported to the Wapello County Jail early Wednesday morning and is currently being held without bond.
