Two Ottumwa women are accused of breaking into a home and assaulting an occupant last month.

Emily Schlotter, 43, and Haylee Beck, 19, have each been charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B felony.

On July 20, court records say Schlotter forced open a door–causing damage to the door frame and lock–at a residence on Hammond Avenue in Ottumwa while accompanied by Beck. Once inside, the two confronted a male occupant over a family member’s ashes.

Authorities allege Schlotter hit the male with a baseball bat. Beck allegedly struck the occupant with her hands.

A warrant for the pair’s arrest was issued on July 27 and they were taken into custody the following day.

Schlotter and Beck were transported to the Wapello County Jail with the bond set at $25,000 each. The bond was later reduced to $1,000 for both defendants.

Both Schlotter and Beck are currently free after posting bond.
