Two Killed in Chain Reaction Collision on Highway 63


A chain reaction collision at a construction stoplight south of Ottumwa claimed the lives of two people Friday night.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, three vehicles were stopped at the traffic light on Highway 63 at approximately 7:57 PM.

The accident report states a semi tractor trailer driven by 22-year-old Reid Hilpipre of Pocahontas failed to stop and collided with a Chevy Equinox. The Equinox then struck a GMC Sierra with a trailer. The GMC then collided with a Jeep Renegade.

The Equinox, Sierra, and Renegade went into a ditch on the east side of the highway and were engulfed in flames.

The two occupants of the Equinox, 68-year-old Steven Hinebaugh and 65-year-old Brenda Hinebaugh, both of Ottumwa, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Hilpipre was injured and transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

The driver of the Renegade, 49-year-old Lora Sprouse of Bloomfield, was also injured and taken to the hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
