A Pella graduate died while participating in a training exercise at a Georgia base last week.

A press release from the U.S. Army in Fort Moore, Georgia announced the death of 19-year-old Jacob T. Atchison. Atchison experienced a medical emergency during a training event with his company on post. Atchison was assigned to Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 197th Infantry Brigade.

The press release says combat lifesaver procedures were immediately administered and Atchison was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

An investigation will be launched to determine Atchison’s cause of death.

“We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this outstanding Soldier and send our heartfelt condolences to his family. They are in our thoughts and prayers.” Lt. Col. Josh Horner, Commander of 3rd Battalion, 47th Infrantry Regiment

Atchison began Infantry One Station Unit Training (OSUT) on May 12. He was on track to participate today in his company’s Turning Green Ceremony, which symbolizes the completion of the basic combat training portion of OSUT, according to the press release.
