Police: Ottumwa Man Punched Victim Unconscious And Left Scene

An Ottumwa man is accused of assaulting another man in a parking lot and leaving the scene.

39-year-old Leon Stewart has been charged with willful injury (Class C felony) and driving while barred (aggravated misdemeanor).

Police say on Sunday at 1:43 PM, Stewart punched a man in the face at Casey’s on East Main Street in Ottumwa.

According to court records, the punch immediately rendered the victim unconscious. The victim fell and struck his head on the concrete parking lot. Stewart left the parking lot via car without attempting to render aid to the man he assaulted. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say witnesses and video surveillance observed Stewart attacking the victim and fleeing the scene. Stewart has a driver’s license that currently bars him from operating a motor vehicle. Stewart also admitted to driving away.

Stewart was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. His bond has been set at $12,000 cash only.
