Jerry Coatney


Jerry Hartley Coatney, age 74, of Mystic, passed away Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines.

Jerry was born on November 28, 1947 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Jesse Bendict and Margaret Elizabeth (Adams) Coatney.  He was united in marriage to JoElla Elaine Watts on September 16, 1966 in Unionville, Missouri.  To this union, three children were born, Jerry, Kimberly and Nicholas.  The couple later divorced.  On December 8, 1992, Jerry married Karen (See) Templeton in Mystic, Iowa.  To this union, Jerry gained three bonus children, Angela, Brian and Phillip.

Jerry worked as a Supervisor for McGraw-Edison in Centerville until the Centerville office closed.  He then worked at the Iowegian for several years.  Jerry was then a Maintenance Supervisor at Wells.  He was one of the first employees hired at Wells in Centerville when they opened.   After 29 loyal years of work, he retired.

Jerry’s biggest joy in his life were his children and grandchildren.  He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and playing cribbage in his free time.

Left to honor Jerry’s memory are his wife, Karen Coatney of Mystic; his children, Jerry M. (Kristy) Coatney of Brazil, Kimberly (Craig) Coatney of Brazil, and Nicholas (Sarah) Coatney of Brazil; step children, Angela (Chad) Jones of Cincinnati, Brian (Cyndi) Templeton of Centerville, and Phillip (Rachel) Templeton of Missouri; 19 grandchildren, Ross Vanderheyden, Jessica (Bill) Fowler, Noah Coatney, Abigail Coatney, Deagan Coatney, Remi Coatney, Erica Kellow, Trinity Fondaw, Brandon Jones, Brett Jones, Corie Jones, Kaleb (Lexy) Templeton, Ellie Templeton, Riley Hawkins, Kyera Hawkins, Cody Templeton, Emily Templeton, Brynlee Gladbach, and Asher Templeton;  five great grandchildren, Reed Vanderheyden, Addison Fowler, Emerson Fowler, Easton Templeton and Skylar Templeton; three siblings, Shirley (Jackie) Fry of Albia, Ruth (Jack) Arnold of Ottumwa, Bonnie (Ed) Amundson of Arizona; as well as several extended family members and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Margaret Coatney; and siblings, Rev. W. Russell Coatney, Ruby Kuzik, Julie Mooney, Doyle Coatney, Wanda Strange, Glada Hull, Doris Mahan, Franklin Shafer, Clayton Shafer, Darriel Coatney, and Janite Holmes.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11AM, Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Dennis Beeson officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at Haines Cemetery, north of Centerville.  Visitation will take place Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with the family greeting friends from 9-11AM.  Memorials may be written to the family of Jerry Coatney, to be determined at a later date and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, ATTN: Coatney Family, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at
