Ottumwa Man Arrested for Burglary

An Ottumwa man was arrested for forcing his way into a residence and violating a no-contact order.

35-year-old Joshua Umphress second-degree burglary, a Class C felony, and violation of a no-contact order, a simple misdemeanor.

On March 27th at 11:45 AM, authorities say Umphress entered an occupied structure on South Moore Street in Ottumwa with the intention of committing assault.

According to court records, multiple people were in the residence and when Umphress attempted to fight a person in the home, Umphress was restrained by another person. Additionally, Umphress was hit by a baseball bat while attempting to force his way into the residence. Umphress sustained many “bumps and bruises” during the incident.

A person in the home had a restraining order against Umphress dating back to September 2019. Ottumwa police say Umphress broke the no-contact order by calling the victim and attempting to enter the residence.

Umphress was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail. He is currently free after posting bond.
