An officer from the Ottumwa Police Department was involved in a two-car accident Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, the wreck occurred at 2:20 PM at the intersection of Highway 34 and Highway 149. Officer Mandy Martell was driving an OPD vehicle southbound Highway 149. Martell was responding to a 911 call and had the vehicle’s sirens and lights activated.

85-year-old Venolia Shefranek of Summerville, Missouri was operating a 2007 Ford Edge traveling eastbound on Highway 34.

The sheriff’s office says due to blind spots created by yielding traffic, Martell did not see the Ford Edge. Conversely, because of the blind spots, Shefranek did not see the police vehicle and also did not see or hear the patrol vehicle.

After the collision, Shefranek suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. Martell was not injured, according to the report.

The accident remains under investigation.
