On Saturday, 14 veterans were recognized and honored with handmade Quilts of Valor during a heartfelt ceremony at American Legion Post 138. The quilts serve as a symbol of gratitude for their service and sacrifice.

Post Commander Mike Hudson, a Vietnam War veteran, has overseen many such ceremonies over the years. During this event, he experienced the honor firsthand as he received a quilt himself. The moment was deeply emotional and meaningful for him, as it has been for many veterans before him.

Also among the recipients was Dennis Sommer, who served in the 1950s. Throughout his military career, he had the opportunity to meet several prominent historical figures, including President Dwight Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to commemorate the anniversary of Jamestown’s founding. The ceremony added another significant moment to his life’s accomplishments.

The event underscored the mission of Post 138 to support and honor veterans in every way possible. The presentation of Quilts of Valor is just one example of the post’s ongoing commitment. Volunteers, particularly the women who craft the quilts, play a vital role in ensuring veterans feel appreciated and supported.
