Kenneth Eugene Reed, 86, of Hedrick, died at 1:29 a.m. July 27, 2020 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

He was born August 19, 1933 in Novelty, MO to Harold and Neva Campbell Reed. Kenneth married Janice Kay Stull on August 17, 1958 in the Ollie United Methodist Church.

A 1951 high school graduate in Novelty, MO, he attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College for 2 years. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army for 2 years during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska. He returned to college after his military service to finish his B.A. and earning a Master of Education in School Administration. Kenneth taught for 30 years at Farson, Pekin, Ottumwa and Hedrick, teaching many students industrial arts and drivers education. He was a principal in Hedrick for 14 years, retiring from Hedrick Community Schools in 1986. Kenneth also managed the Home Oil gas station in Hedrick for 11 years, retiring in 1999.

He enjoyed camping, traveling, model trains, model aircraft and woodworking. He also enjoyed remodeling their home and building their three car garage.

Kenneth was an active member of the community volunteering on many projects, including serving on the Hedrick Second Century Committee that organized and built the Hedrick Community Center and Library.

Surviving is his wife, Janice; their sons, USAF Retired Lt. Col. Rodney (Melinda) Reed of Lompoc, CA and Roger (Gina) Reed of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Spencer (Marisa) Reed, Nathan Reed, Lexie Reed and Abby (Dalton) Doom; two sisters, Norma Jean (Gerald) DeWitt of Osceola and Donna Fay Simmons of Novelty, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ronald Simmons.

Private funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, August 1st , at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor John Lewis officiating. For those not able to be inside the funeral home with the family during the service, you may watch the funeral from the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page.

Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery near Hedrick with military services. Although the funeral service is private, all are welcome to attend the committal service at the cemetery at approximately 2:15 p.m. Limited open visitation will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, July 31st. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hedrick Volunteer Fire Department.
