Raymond Gene Phillips, 85, of Ottumwa died at 6:35 p.m. January 21, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
He was born January 16, 1937 in Ottumwa to Raymond Patrick and Irene Kershner Phillips. He married Alice “Sally” Beck in 1988.
A 1954 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Gene had owned and operated Phillips Sanitation for almost 50 years until retiring in 1998 to become a cattle farmer.
He enjoyed dancing and attending bluegrass music festivals. He loved spending time with family, friends and his beloved dogs.
Surviving is his wife, Sally; children, Kris (Mike) O’Malley of Ottumwa, Kerry (Cynthia) Phillips of Agency, Eileen (John) Courtney, of Ottumwa, William Jarman, of Ottumwa, Brinda Day of Kansas City, MO, Jeff (Jenny) Dalbey and Lisa (Darren) Batterson, both of Ottumwa; fifteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister, Jo Ann (Jack) Powers of Council Bluffs.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kevin Gene Phillips.
Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Thursday, January 27th, 2022, at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, January 28th 2022 at Reece Funeral Home. For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
