August 19, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Celebrate Iowa Artists in Historic Bentonsport, Iowa
On August 19th, the initial Celebrate Iowa Artists will be held from 10 – 5, honoring an artist in Iowa who exhibits distinguished work in a field of art. This will be an annual event in the scenic village of Bentonsport.
This year’s honoree is S.E. Iowa’s own renowned watercolor artist, Wendell Mohr (1926-2008).
Wendell made his home and studio in the Historic Vernon Schoolhouse, just across the Des Moines River from Bentonsport. Wendell was a prolific painter of cityscapes, seaports, locomotives and factories. He was an excellent teacher with an outgoing personality and a curious nature who held classes, workshops and demonstrations throughout the Midwest. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. He found great joy in painting.
Wendell Mohr will be honored by sharing his life history and artwork in specialty shops and the Mason House B&B from 10 – 5. An expanded exhibit of some of his original artwork will be at the Stone House from 10 – 5. Paula Mohr, Wendell’s daughter, will conduct tours of the Historic Vernon Schoolhouse from 1 – 4.
The Villages Folk School will be offering a Plein Air Art class with John Preston in the Bentonsport riverside park during this event. To register call: Mel at 319-288-0047 or register @villagesfolkschool.com. There will be artist demonstrations throughout the park. Any interested artists are welcome to come and demonstrate. Call Pam at 319-293-3749 for further information.
