Dorothy Maxine Hudson Ray Hiatt Schakel, 88, of Ottumwa, died at 12:16 a.m. February 24, 2023 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
She was born January 30, 1935 in Mendota, MO to Paul Luvirn and Mary Vincent Hudson. Dorothy married Leonard C. Schakel on October 21, 1978 and he preceded her in death on May 14, 2013. They were married for a “LONG” 35 years.
Dorothy’s first job was telephone operator in Centerville, followed by many factory jobs in California and Iowa. She enjoyed walking, liked camping, doing puzzles, watching TV, playing bingo, reading mysteries and making Christmas candy.
Surviving are her children, Dan David (Candy) Ray of Moulton, Dennis (Patti) Ray of Atalissa, Brenda Hiatt of Ottumwa and Paul (Kim) Hiatt of Plainfield, IL; step-daughter, Christy (Bob) Stevens of Ottumwa; daughter-in-law, Hazel Schakel (Robert Lankford) of Plano; her sister, Deloris Schark of Ottumwa; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson and a great-grandson.
Visitation will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 2nd at Reece Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, March 3rd, at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Schlotter officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. The family will be present to greet friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
