For nearly two decades, Bridge View Center has been a gathering place for entertainment, celebrations, conventions, and community events in Ottumwa.
But the story behind the facility goes back much further than its opening day.
The idea of bringing a convention and entertainment center to Ottumwa was years in the making. Community leaders recognized the need for a facility that could attract larger events, bring visitors into the area, and provide local residents with another place to enjoy concerts, performances, and special occasions.
It took approximately 10 years of planning, fundraising, and hard work to turn that vision into reality.
The project came together through a combination of community support and public funding. The City of Ottumwa contributed $12 million, while a $7.5 million Vision Iowa grant helped move the project forward. Wapello County, local businesses, residents, and Bridge View Center, Inc. also played important roles in making the project possible.
After years of preparation and construction, Bridge View Center officially opened its doors on January 1, 2007.
The facility, located in downtown Ottumwa along the Des Moines River, features a 664-seat theater, a 30,000-square-foot exposition hall, meeting rooms, and banquet facilities. The building provides space for everything from concerts and theatrical performances to conventions, weddings, trade shows, and community gatherings.
Over the years, Bridge View Center has welcomed performers, entertainers, businesses, organizations, and visitors from throughout Iowa and beyond.
It has also become an important part of Ottumwa’s downtown economy, bringing people into the community who often visit local restaurants, hotels, and businesses while attending events.
In September 2023, another addition to the area came with the opening of the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites next to Bridge View Center. The four-story hotel features 84 guest rooms, providing visitors with a convenient place to stay when attending events and conferences.
What started as an idea shared by community leaders has grown into a facility that continues to serve Ottumwa and the surrounding communities.
Today, Bridge View Center is more than just a place to attend a concert or convention. It is a place where families celebrate milestones, organizations bring people together, and the community welcomes visitors.
Nearly 20 years after opening, the original vision continues to play a role in Ottumwa’s downtown and its future.
