Families looking to save money on Halloween costumes have another option this year through the Wellman Public Library, which is once again making its costume collection available to the community.
The program started about seven years ago after the library received a donation of several costumes. What began as a small collection has grown into a resource for families who want to celebrate Halloween without spending money on an outfit that may only be worn for a short time.
Wellman Public Library Director Carrie Geno said the idea came from recognizing how expensive costumes can be, especially for children who outgrow them or only wear them for a few hours.
The library created a checkout system so community members could borrow costumes instead of buying new ones each year.
The collection includes outfits for all ages, from infants to adults. Geno estimates the library lends out around 30 costumes each Halloween season.
In the early years, the library added to its selection by purchasing discounted costumes after Halloween. More recently, community donations have helped keep the collection growing.
Once Halloween has passed, library staff review the inventory and look for costumes that need to be replaced because of wear or lack of use. Donated costumes can then be added to the collection, giving families new options for the following year.
The program offers residents a practical way to enjoy Halloween while making use of a community resource.
