Ottumwa Regional Health Center is expanding its mental health services with the launch of a new Intensive Outpatient Program, designed to provide structured treatment for adults dealing with mental health challenges.
The program, known as an Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, provides evidence-based therapy for adults 18 and older experiencing mild to moderate psychiatric concerns. Services include treatment for depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder and co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.
The program allows patients to receive consistent, structured care while continuing to work, attend school and maintain their daily routines. Treatment is provided through group-based sessions led by licensed therapists, psychiatrists and a program coordinator.
ORHC CEO Richard Bergmann said the new program will help expand access to intensive outpatient mental health care in Wapello County.
“Launching our Intensive Outpatient Program is a critical step toward expanded access to intensive outpatient mental health services in Wapello County,” Bergmann said. “For many patients, inpatient therapy may not be indicated, but structured and consistent treatment is still critical to their recovery and day-to-day resilience.”
The program is designed for people transitioning from inpatient care, those who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy provides, and individuals who need treatment that fits around their daily responsibilities.
Referrals can come from healthcare providers or community partners, and patients may also refer themselves. Each patient will complete an initial assessment to determine eligibility. Virtual treatment options are also available for those who qualify.
Christina Smith, IOP Manager, said the program focuses on providing individualized support while helping patients develop tools they can use in their everyday lives.
“Some of our goals in outpatient therapy may include improving personal communication skills, helping patients develop more effective coping strategies, building self-esteem and confidence, and addressing the root causes of mental health challenges,” Smith said.
ORHC says treatment begins with an assessment and confidential conversation to help determine the appropriate care plan.
The Intensive Outpatient Program is located at 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue in Ottumwa. For more information, call 641-683-6666 or visit the ORHC behavioral health website.
