Phillip Dean Shilling, 77, of Ottumwa died at 1:05 p.m. October 3, 2026 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
He was born May 22, 1949 in Iowa City to Phillip Wayne and Lila Katherine Stockdale Shilling. He married Sharon Lathrop and they later divorced. He married Nancy Dean on October 31, 1997 in Ottumwa.
Growing up in Eddyville, Phillip graduated from Eddyville High School in 1968. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked at Easters for a short time and later worked for Hormel Foods. He retired from Excel in 2014.
Phillip loved horses and had many growing up. He loved spending time outdoors especially on the farm and fishing. He enjoyed watching old westerns and antique cars. His two favorite cars were Chevelles and 1955 Chevys. Phillip had a special place in his heart for dogs and cats.
Surviving is his wife, Nancy of Ottumwa; his children, Cheryl (Tony) Deutschle of Hedrick, Jennifer (Gary) Lanman of Hedrick, Phillip (Nicole) Shilling II of Oskaloosa, Richard (Frewoyini) Shilling of Ottumwa; step-children, Cara (Jim) Miedema of Pella and Renee (Mike) Roozeboom of Pella; 23 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; his siblings, Phyllis Mills of Missouri, Bonnie Harden of Eddyville and Paulette (Kenny) Groet of Bussey; many nieces and nephews; as well as his dog, Teddy and his cat, Jelly Bean.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Shilling.
His body has been cremated.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 9th at Reece Funeral Home with Chaplain Gary Brooks officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #775 and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Memorials may be made to V.F.W. Honor Guard or Heartland Humane Society.
