Cooler temperatures and changing leaves make fall a great time to get outside and explore Iowa’s state parks and forests.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is highlighting 11 hiking destinations across the state where visitors can enjoy colorful fall scenery, wooded trails, scenic overlooks and unique Iowa landscapes.
Among the recommended destinations is Palisades-Kepler State Park, where hikers can take the two-mile Cedar Cliff Trail through the woods and across historic bridges before reaching a ridge-top shelter overlooking the Cedar River.
For those looking for a longer adventure, Yellow River State Forest in northeast Iowa offers about 32 miles of trails, varying elevations and opportunities for primitive camping.
Loess Hills State Forest offers more than 60 miles of trails across its 11,000 acres, along with sweeping views of the area’s unique landscape and native prairie.
Other locations on the DNR’s fall hiking list include Waubonsie State Park, Ledges State Park, Wildcat Den State Park, Backbone State Park, Pikes Peak State Park, Pine Lake State Park, Brushy Creek State Recreation Area and Dolliver Memorial State Park.
From the bluffs and river views at Pikes Peak to the sandstone formations at Dolliver Memorial, each location offers something different for visitors looking to enjoy Iowa’s outdoors this fall.
The DNR also encourages visitors to check trail conditions and park information before heading out. Fall color typically reaches its peak at different times across the state, with southern Iowa generally seeing peak color later than northern Iowa.
