As summer winds down and the Labor Day weekend approaches, many Iowans are making plans to spend time outdoors with family and friends.
Whether you’re heading to an Iowa state park, spending the day at the beach, fishing a favorite lake or taking a boat or kayak onto the water, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding residents to make safety a priority.
Boaters should make sure everyone on board has a properly fitted life jacket. Children 12 and younger are required to wear one whenever a vessel is underway. Boaters should also remain alert, obey posted warnings, avoid dams and other hazards, and check water conditions before heading out.
The DNR also reminds boaters that alcohol and boating do not mix. Operators should avoid alcohol, and the same .08 blood alcohol limit that applies to driving also applies to boating.
For those swimming, the DNR recommends keeping a close eye on children and assigning a designated adult to supervise them. Swimming with a buddy, staying in designated swimming areas and following posted signs and flags can also help prevent accidents. Iowa’s public beaches do not have lifeguards on duty.
Anyone spending time outdoors should also bring plenty of water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Pets should remain on leashes, and visitors are asked to follow park rules, respect other campers and pack out all trash.
Paddlers are encouraged to wear life jackets, avoid flooded or swollen waterways and stay away from low-head dams, which can create dangerous currents. Paddlers should know their route, check river levels and weather conditions, and let someone know where they are going and when they expect to return.
The DNR also reminds visitors not to transport firewood between locations. Instead, purchase firewood locally and burn it at the campsite.
Before heading out, outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to check the Iowa DNR website for current park alerts, closures, beach conditions and waterway hazards.
With a little preparation and awareness, Iowans can enjoy a safe Labor Day weekend while making the most of the final days of summer.
