Emergency crews are responding to a natural gas leak in downtown What Cheer Friday evening, according to social media posts from the City of What Cheer and What Cheer Volunteer Fire and Rescue at approximately 7:12 p.m.
The leak has been identified in the alley behind the post office. Residents living north and east of the post office who are smelling gas in their homes are advised to leave their residences for their safety until Alliant Energy can repair the leak. Those with concerns are encouraged to contact Alliant Energy directly.
For those who choose to remain in their homes, the What Cheer Volunteer Fire and Rescue is asking that all doors and windows be kept closed, and that residents avoid smoking, lighting open flames of any kind, or doing anything that could create a spark near the affected area.
Emergency crews are on scene working to resolve the situation.
