An Ottumwa man with a previous burglary conviction was arrested for the same offense after police say he stole an item from a vehicle earlier this week.
Carson Lewis, 20, was charged with third-degree burglary – second or subsequent offense, a Class D felony, and attempted third-degree burglary – second or subsequent offense, an aggravated misdemeanor.
On July 13th at approximately 11:25 PM, court records say Lewis entered a pair of unoccupied vehicles at a residence on North Elm Street in Ottumwa. According to police, Lewis took a bank card from one of the vehicles.
Authorities say Lewis was seen on a security camera going into the vehicles. Additionally, Lewis allegedly had the bank card in his possession when he was arrested by police.
In April, Lewis pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree burglary in a separate case. Court records say Lewis unsuccessfully attempted to steal items from two cars at an Ottumwa residence in January. Lewis was sentenced to a year of probation after reaching a plea deal.
Lewis is currently being held in the Wapello County Jail on a $7,000 bond.
Lewis has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 23rd.
